Are Judes really more environmentally friendly than disposable diapers? What is the energy balance of washing?Updated a month ago

Many parents have concerns about the energy footprint of Judes.

In fact, Judes are even more sustainable in terms of water, waste, and electricity consumption compared to disposable diapers.

If you diaper your child sustainably with Judes for 3 years, compared to diapering with disposable diapers, you save

  • about 40000 liters of water
  •  Electricity
  • 1 ton of plastic waste
  • about 420 kg of CO2 equivalents
  • €1000 and more in costs

Want to know more? Here's how we arrived at these numbers:

Water consumption
Even without considering the production of non-woven fabric and superabsorber, the water consumption of disposable diapers is already 202 L/kg.
For the 5000-6000 diapers a child needs throughout their diapering period, that's about 55,500l of water consumption per child! (Data from Federal Environment Agency)

Now for the cloth diaper:
In a study by the Environment Agency scientists calculated a consumption of 53L water for washing with an A-rated efficiency washing machine per load at 60°C. Thus, washing Judes results in 14,000L of water consumption per child.
When Judes are washed, household laundry can be added without any worries. This further improves the water footprint of Judes.
